Choosing the best way to farewell your pet

Choosing the best way to farewell your pet

When that sad time comes to say goodbye to your beautiful pet, it’s best to be as prepared as possible. If you can plan ahead of time how you want to bid your friend farewell, the process will be a little easier to bear.

One of the tough decisions to make is whether to leave your pet’s journey to its final resting place in the hands of your vet, or whether you’d like to take control of the farewell yourself. If the latter is the case, you’ll probably want to decide if your pet should be farewelled, wrapped in a soft shroud, or if you’d prefer a more rigid pet casket.

To help you with this choice, here’s some information on currently available options so you can make your own comparison and an informed decision.

Farewell Shrouds

The premium pet farewell kit is the Sweet Goodbye COCOON™ for larger pets and Sweet Goodbye CLOUD® for smaller pets.

  • These handcrafted premium shrouds are made of soft, quality natural woolen layers to keep your pet snug and secure. It is not a hard, rigid casket.
  • The flexible natural material allows you to include your pet’s favourite toys within the shroud
  • Includes a strong built-in carrying ‘cradle’ to make lifting and carrying safe and easy for you, while keeping your pet secure and protected from the elements
  • Suitable for either burial or cremation
  • Sizes suitable for very large dogs right down to the smallest of pets
  • Your choice of a rainbow of colors so you can personalize your pet’s farewell
  • Biodegradable and environmentally friendly
  • Includes a Ceremony Kit - a 24-page guide book to help create your own special ceremony in honor of your beloved pet, a colorful Garland and a hand-carved wooden Memorial Marker, which can be personalized with your pet’s name.

Pet Caskets

There are quite a few providers of ‘hard shell’ pet caskets and they are the more economical option.

  • Most pet caskets have air-tight seals and some are not degradable – a pro or a con, depending on your personal views
  • Suitable for either burial or cremation
  • Color choice is limited – in fact, most come in just one color. Some pet caskets can be decorated with paint or markers for personalisation.
  • Casket size can only accommodate small to medium-sized pets. If for example you have a large dog, a farewell shroud is more appropriate.
  • Current pet caskets have no carry handles for easy lifting and carrying
